Pilates Accessories Guide

Starting Pilates at home and not sure which props you actually need? Here is a simple guide to the most common Pilates accessories, what each one is for, and where to begin.

The Pilates ring (magic circle)

A flexible ring with handles that you press slowly and release under control. It adds gentle, even resistance to exercises for the arms, chest, inner and outer thighs and core. It's one of the classic Pilates props. See our Pilates ring.

The mini ball

A soft ball of around 25 cm. Placed between your knees, under your pelvis or behind your back, it either adds a little instability — so your stabilising muscles work harder — or gives gentle support during stretches. See our mini ball.

Fabric resistance bands

Short loop bands worn above the knees or around the ankles for leg, hip and glute exercises. Fabric bands are more comfortable than thin latex loops: they lie flat and are less likely to roll up. A set of three resistance levels lets you progress over time. See our fabric bands.

The stretching strap

A long cotton strap with an adjustable buckle that helps you hold a stretch at the right length — useful for hamstrings, hips and shoulders at the end of a session. See our strap.

The mat

Pilates involves a lot of lying and kneeling, so a cushioned mat (around 8–10 mm) is more comfortable than a thin yoga mat. See our 8 mm mat.

Grip socks

Non-slip socks are often required in reformer studios, and they help you stay steady on smooth floors at home. See our grip socks.

Where to start

If you're buying your first props, the ring, the mini ball and a set of fabric bands will cover most beginner mat Pilates routines. That's exactly what our Essentials Kit brings together. Add a mat for comfort, and grip socks if you also take studio classes.
